Ideas from the Islamic world were increasingly transferring into Europe during the Middle Ages as a result of trade, travel, and the Crusades, among other factors. During the late 11th and early 13th centuries, the Crusades promoted intellectual and cultural contacts in addition to being a series of religious and military wars. The information that the returning crusaders carried back with them included sophisticated medical procedures, scientific ideas, and ancient manuscripts that had been maintained and developed by Islamic academics. The Renaissance, a time of rekindled interest in education and the arts that would ensue in Europe, was greatly aided by this inflow of information. Trade networks were essential to the dissemination of information as well. Due to their large maritime trade routes, Italian city-states like Venice and Genoa were hubs for the flow of ideas and products between the East and the West. There were significant ramifications when Islamic knowledge was brought to Europe, especially in the areas of exploration and navigation. The 15th and 16th centuries, known as the Age of Exploration, were characterised by extraordinary expeditions that broadened European perspectives and established connections with hitherto undiscovered regions and populations. The foundation of this age was the development of shipbuilding and navigation, both of which benefited from earlier Islamic inventions. These travels were made possible in large part by the invention of the caravel, a ship designed for lengthy maritime trips, and the use of the magnetic compass, which had been brought to Europe from China via the Islamic world. The most famous person of this era was Christopher Columbus, a Genoese navigator whose transatlantic expeditions in the 1490s were funded by Ferdinand and Isabella, the Spanish kings. The goal of Columbus's explorations, which started in 1492, was to locate a direct maritime route to Asia that would circumvent the land routes under the authority of Muslim empires. Even though his travels brought him to the Americas rather than Asia, they had a significant impact on the opening of the New World to European explorers and colonists. Other explorers such as Ferdinand Magellan, whose voyage completed the first circuit of the earth, and Amerigo Vespucci, after whom the Americas were called, followed Columbus's explorations. These journeys had far-reaching effects, both favourable and unfavourable. As a result, enormous trade networks linking Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas were established, allowing for the easier interchange of products, concepts, and cultural practices. But they also brought about a time of invasion, settlement, and exploitation, especially in the Americas, where native populations suffered much from sickness, uprooting, and conflict. The search for riches and new trade routes was not the only motivation behind the Age of Exploration. There was also a great deal of scientific research and intellectual interest at this time. European explorers were frequently driven by a desire to gain a deeper understanding of the world, which was very much in keeping with the humanist ideals of the Renaissance.
