The great majority of people in these areas were connected by their shared Catholic faith, regardless of their language or origin. Significant events in Spain the same year saw the fall of Granada, the last Muslim bastion on the Iberian Peninsula, signalling the end of years of Reconquista, further solidified this unity. With this triumph, Catholic orthodoxy was reinforced and Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile were able to solidify their reigns. Then, the Catholic Monarchs passed the Alhambra Decree, which ordered the deportation of any Jews who refused to convert to Christianity, drastically altering the religious makeup of their realm. A mix of economic concerns, religious fervour, and the goal of uniting Spain under a single religion and eradicating all possible causes of disagreement or division propelled this order. The Jewish people had to make the terrible decision either become Christians, flee their country, or risk harsh consequences, which may have included death. Known as conversos or New Christians, a large number of converted Jews continued to confront prejudice and mistrust. Designed to suppress heresy, the Inquisition closely examined these converts, frequently charging them with clandestine Judaism. Many Jews left for more accepting areas like the Ottoman Empire, Italy, and North Africa as a result of this atmosphere of fear and persecution. The fact that Muslims in Spain were first given a short respite is evidence of the Catholic Monarchs' pragmatic politics, which acknowledged the economic benefits of the Muslim community. This tolerance, nevertheless, was not long-lasting. Muslims were likewise given a harsh choice by 1501: either convert to Catholicism or risk being banished. Though many Muslims, referred to as Moriscos, continued to practise Islam covertly, much like the conversos, this resulted in a flood of conversions. Thus, Western and Central Europe seemed mostly religiously homogeneous at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Only little Jewish populations survived in some regions, such as the Low Countries (modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands) and some German territories, where they were comparatively tolerated. The predominant religion was Catholicism. There were conflicts and inconsistencies within this theological homogeneity because of the social unrest and mistrust that were stoked by forced conversions and expulsions. Furthermore, serious challenges to the Catholic Church's authority were starting to appear beneath the surface of this supposedly united Catholic Europe. Dissent was sown by the Church's enormous riches and influence, as well as by rampant corruption and the moral lapses of many of its leaders. Laity dissatisfaction grew as a result of the perception held by clergy at all levels of the ecclesiastical hierarchy that they were more focused on their material wealth and power than on their spiritual responsibilities. It was actually a hazardous time of religious conformity and the Catholic Church's overall domination. Selling indulgences, which were meant to lessen the penalty for sins, became a particularly heinous practice of the Church and symbolised the profound moral rot and commercialization of faith that many detractors denounced. Reform was advocated by academics and theologians such as Erasmus of Rotterdam, who emphasised devotion, humility, and the clergy's moral responsibilities. They also urged a return to the original teachings of Christ and the Scriptures. Europe's religious landscape was about to undergo a tremendous upheaval that would change it forever. By the early sixteenth century, the growing unhappiness found a voice in German theologian and monk Martin Luther. His Ninety-Five Theses, published in 1517, criticised Church doctrine and launched the Protestant Reformation. Luther's theses, which promoted the idea that salvation may come from faith alone rather than works, denounced the selling of indulgences and urged a return to what he believed to be the real teachings of the Bible. This doctrinal position threatened the Church's financial viability as well as its authority because indulgence sales had been a substantial source of income. The printing press's recent innovation, which made it possible for Luther's writings to be widely distributed, helped his views acquire popularity quickly. Many disillusioned with the corruption and worldliness of the Church found resonance in his plea for reform. As his campaign gained traction, it drew in theologians, academics, princes, and political figures who saw a chance to seize Church property and assets while simultaneously demonstrating their independence from the pope. Throughout Europe, the Protestant Reformation quickly spread beyond Germany and served as an inspiration for several reform initiatives. The theological unity of Europe was further shattered when individuals like Huldrych Zwingli in Switzerland and John Calvin in France and subsequently Geneva established their separate interpretations of Christian teaching. Calvinist ideals were particularly well-established in Scotland, the Netherlands, and some regions of France because to his theocratic rule and predestination theology. There were violent battles during this time of religious upheaval, along with heated theological and intellectual discussions. As Protestantism gained popularity, Catholic and Protestant kings fought for dominance and attempted to force their religious views on their subjects, sparking a string of conflicts and political upheavals. The Holy Roman Empire's religious strife was briefly resolved in 1555 when the Peace of Augsburg gave regional rulers the option to designate either Lutheranism or Catholicism as the official religion of their domains. Yet, this tenuous calm did not last throughout all of Europe, as religious conflicts persisted in other regions. The politics, culture, and society of Europe were significantly impacted by the Reformation. It caused the once-uniform Catholic Church to split apart and gave rise to several Protestant groups. Additionally, it promoted literacy by encouraging the Bible to be translated into common tongues, which would increase common people's access to the Scriptures. The focus on personal faith and Bible interpretation upended the Church's established hierarchical structure and prepared the way for the emergence of contemporary ideas of individuality and religious freedom. By the end of the sixteenth century, religious divisions had irreparably split Europe. The religious unity that formerly defined the continent was destroyed by the Protestant Reformation, resulting in a patchwork of Protestant and Catholic provinces. This split had a significant impact on European history, affecting intellectual and cultural movements, nationstate formation, and the emergence of secularism in the modern age. Thus, the complicated and sometimes acrimonious interaction between religion and politics that would continue to define European civilization for decades to come was made possible by the religious upheavals of the sixteenth century.
