Italy entered the race for Africa later than other European nations, keen to stake its claim and establish itself as a colonial power, even though other European nations had already built sizable colonial holdings on the African continent. When a local sultan sold Assab Bay, a vital port city on the Red Sea, to an Italian shipping firm in 1884, the Italian exploration of Africa officially got underway. With this action, Italy demonstrated its emerging desire to have a foothold in the wealthy African regions and extend its influence beyond the boundaries of Europe. Italy took possession of the Egyptian Red Sea port of Massawa in 1886 as a preventive measure to forestall French territorial ambitions in the area, encouraged by the British. The foundation for Italy's later Horn of Africa expansion was established by these early conquests. The turning point was when Italy legally annexed Eritrea in 1889, claiming control over the country and its resources. But Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia, whose rise to power aligned with Italy's territorial goals in the area, presented a formidable hurdle to Italy's aspirations. Italy and Menelik II forged a contentious agreement known as the Treaty of Wuchale in an effort to establish Italian dominance over Eritrea. Despite disagreements, the treaty's provisions seemed to support Italian interests. Menelik II received financial and military support in exchange for giving Italy authority over Eritrea's foreign policy in the treaty written in Italian. The Ethiopian-language version, however, gave Menelik II the freedom to accept or reject Italian authority—a significant difference. Later on, this language disparity would cause problems and ignite a conflict that would have an impact on the entire region. When Italy attempted to execute the conditions of the treaty, asserting its control over Eritrea and infringing on Ethiopian sovereignty, tensions between Ethiopia and Italy reached a breaking point in 1895. It was inevitable that conflict would break out, and in 1896 the two sides engaged in a decisive battle in the Battle of Adwa. A far bigger and more determined Ethiopian army decisively defeated the Italian soldiers at the Battle of Adwa, marking a turning point in Italian colonial history. Thousands of Italian soldiers were slain, taken prisoner, or chaotically fled the battlefield as a result of Italy's crushing loss. Ethiopia emerged from the conflict triumphant, reaffirming its independence and territorial sovereignty. Italy's defeat at Adwa had significant and long-lasting effects. Italy was rocked by the devastating loss, which led to widespread rioting and instability in places like Rome and Naples. The expensive military misadventure left the Italian populace disillusioned and incensed, and they demanded that Italy immediately return its troops from Africa and reevaluate its colonial aspirations. Italy was forced to accept the harsh truth of its colonial aspirations during the Battle of Adwa. Though gracious in his triumph, Menelik II let Italy keep its hold over Eritrea as long as it adhered to stringent guidelines that upheld Ethiopia's independence and sovereignty. Italy's expansionist aspirations in Africa were effectively dashed by the defeat at Adwa, which also acted as a sobering reminder of the limitations of imperial authority. Looking back, Italy's colonial adventure in Africa is a lesson in the dangers of unbridled ambition and the foolishness of undervaluing the determination of native communities. The Battle of Adwa is both a reminder of the colonial heritage still present in Africa today and a monument to the Ethiopian people's tenacity and will in the face of outside assault.
