These products, which included sugar, tobacco, cotton, and coffee, were essential to the growth of international trade networks in addition to powering the economic engines of their own nations. In an effort to increase their profits through intensive agricultural methods, European colonial powers converted large areas of land in the Americas into plantations devoted to these profitable crops. To handle the difficult and sometimes exhausting work needed in planting, growing, and harvesting these crops, the creation of these plantations required a sizable and consistent labour force. At first, European colonists tried to use the Indigenous inhabitants in the area as labour. However, a number of issues soon made this strategy untenable. Devastating population reductions resulted from the Native Americans' frequent deaths from illnesses to which they lacked immunity that were carried over by European settlers. Furthermore, many of the survivors rebelled and caused conflicts in response to the hard labour they were subjected to, which made the colonists' efforts much more difficult. The colonists then turned to indentured slaves from Europe, who consented to labour for a certain period of time in return for transportation to the New World and the assurance of receiving land or money upon the expiration of their slavery. The plantation economy and the transatlantic slave trade had far-reaching effects beyond short-term financial advantages. On the Americas and Africa, it had significant and enduring consequences on population, culture, and society. Racial hierarchies and social divides were firmly established in the Americas as a result of the enormous number of enslaved people, and these differences remained long after slavery was outlawed.
