The workforce underwent tremendous transformation during this time, with the majority of workers being regarded as "free" in legal terms. But in this context, "free" has many different meanings and connotations. Although workers had the legal right to quit their jobs at any time and were not considered to be expendable property, the harsh economic conditions they faced sometimes made this freedom more theoretical than actual. The transition of industrialised countries from rural to industrial economies gave rise to a growing working class that moved to cities in pursuit of jobs. These labourers were sent to work in often dangerous and hard conditions in factories, mines, and other industrial settings. Their seeming independence was limited by the urgent need to get needs for existence. For many, the decision was clear-cut: labour long hours in hazardous conditions for little pay, or risk famine and homelessness. Despite their legal independence, most workers were functionally bound to their existing employment due to the economic realities of the period, which made quitting one's job without finding another one an impractical alternative. During this time, working conditions were infamously bad. Women and children within the labour force sometimes put in 12 to 16 hours a day, six days a week, in inadequately ventilated, darkly illuminated spaces cluttered with dangerous gear. Because there were insufficient safety precautions and extended exposure to hazardous chemicals, workplace illnesses and accidents were prevalent. Because there were no labour laws in place, businesses could demand excessive hours and provide little pay, which made the situation for workers much worse. The exploitative atmosphere highlighted how restricted the workers' freedom was. The position of industrial workers was nonetheless better than many other types of labour that survived the 19th century, despite these challenges. Systems of forced labour and outright slavery persisted in many regions of the world, including the same industrialised nations. For example, bound labour continued in various forms even after slavery was outlawed in the United States in 1865. Furthermore, European powers frequently enforced cruel labour laws on native people and foreign labourers in colonial regions. Unlike their colleagues in the industrialised cities, these workers faced pressure and harsh consequences for resisting, and they had almost little autonomy or legal redress. On the other hand, industrial workers in North America and Europe were beginning to have the power to organise and at least some legal safeguards. With the growth of labour unions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, workers' demands for fair pay, improved working conditions, and less hours worked were met. These campaigns eventually brought about important reforms, although frequently facing strong opposition from the government and employers. Labour action directly led to the development of the eight-hour workday, the freedom to strike, and the implementation of workplace safety laws. These developments demonstrated the relative independence and agency that industrial workers might exercise— something that was not possible for people in more restrictive labour systems—even though they were gradual and difficult to achieve. Though scarce, the economic environment of the Second Industrial Revolution also offered some prospects for social mobility. Industries expanded quickly, resulting in a need for qualified workers and the creation of new job kinds. Employees with the ability to obtain specialised training or education might advance to higher-paying roles. This was in stark contrast to the inflexible social structures of slave economies or agricultural civilizations, where a person's social standing was usually predetermined from birth. Though remote, the prospect of raising one's economic status was a source of optimism and highlighted a basic freedom that, despite limitations, was nevertheless more palpable than the total absence of options that others had to deal with. In addition, the period saw profound political and social shifts that started to reinterpret what worker freedom meant. The emergence of labour and socialist groups aimed to increase workers' rights and protections while challenging the unfairness of capitalism. These movements had an impact on the creation of social safety nets, such as health care, pensions, and unemployment insurance, in several nations. Even though these programmes were far from ideal, they started to lessen the severe poverty that limited the independence of workers. Workers' political involvement increased their participation in governance and policy-making processes and contributed to more extensive democratic changes. It is crucial to understand that the freedom enjoyed by industrial workers throughout the Second Industrial Revolution differed greatly depending on factors such as industry, location, and personal circumstances. Certain nations have more progressive labour laws and social policies that provide workers with additional perks and protections. In others, the situation remained harsh and exploitative, especially in less developed areas or industries that were resistant to reform. Similar differences existed across various industries and labour classes within the same nation. Those working in more modern, technologically advanced businesses or as skilled artisans sometimes had better pay and working conditions than unskilled labourers in conventional factories or mines. To sum up, the question of whether or not industrial workers throughout the Second Industrial Revolution could be considered "free" is intricate and multifaceted. These employees were free to change jobs legally and were not bound by ownership. However, their actual independence was severely restricted by the severe labour conditions and severe economic destitution they encountered. By drawing a comparison between their situation and that of slaves and forced labourers who had no autonomy at all, the relative nature of their freedom is highlighted. Industrial workers had various benefits and alternatives despite the harsh limitations that helped pave the way for later advancements in social protection and labour rights. Thus, the dichotomy of tyranny and freedom that characterised the Second Industrial Revolution brought attention to the continuous fight for real economic and social liberation.
