The Soviet Union and its supporters, headed by powerful individuals like China's Mao Zedong and subsequently by Nikita Khrushchev and Joseph Stalin, were on one side. They had a strong belief that communism will lead to a just and prosperous future for all people since it promised a society without classes and shared ownership of the means of production. They saw communism as a holistic philosophy that addressed social justice, equality, and the abolition of poverty, rather than just an economic system. They saw a society in which the working class controlled the reins of power, exploitation was outlawed, and resources were allocated based on need. In contrast, communism was viewed with great scepticism and worry in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Western countries. For these nations, capitalist economy, democratic government, and individual liberties were all fundamentally threatened by communism. The United States led the Western bloc, which promoted capitalism and liberal democracy as the pillars of progress in society. They maintained that the best way to promote innovation, economic expansion, and individual liberty was through capitalism, which places a strong focus on free markets, private property, and an entrepreneurial spirit. They said that democracy offered a political system in which the agreement of the governed granted political authority, individual rights were safeguarded, and government was answerable to the people. These radically different ideologies did not only coexist in the post-war world; they ignited a worldwide competition for dominance that came to characterise the second half of the 20th century. The Soviet Union and the United States engaged in fierce competition and mutual antagonism during this time, which is known as the Cold War. Both countries sought to increase their power and spread their respective ideologies throughout the world. The Cold War was distinguished from earlier confrontations by the two superpowers' noticeable lack of direct military participation. Rather, their hostility took the form of a number of different strategies, such as economic rivalry, propaganda, espionage, proxy conflicts, and technical rivalry. There was a clear and deep ideological divide between the two blocs, which affected almost every facet of international affairs. The Cold War was seen by the Soviet Union and its supporters as an existential struggle against the exploitative and imperialist aspects of Western capitalism. By providing assistance and intellectual direction to nations and organisations that adhered to communist ideals, they aimed to uplift and encourage revolutionary forces around the globe. In addition to being genuinely philanthropic, this assistance had a strategic goal: it was meant to build a buffer of socialist allies that would increase the Soviet Union's security and power. However, the United States and its allies saw the rise of communism as a direct danger to both their own national security and the stability of the world. They believed that unfettered communist development would undermine democratic institutions, impede economic liberties, and result in a Soviet-dominated world system. The West adopted a containment strategy to combat this alleged threat and stop communism from spreading further. This strategy took many different forms, such as the Marshall Plan, which aimed to stabilise and reconstruct the economy of war-torn Europe in order to stave off communist uprisings. In order to ensure collective security against future Soviet invasion, it also required the creation of military alliances like NATO. Along with an extraordinary arms race in nuclear weapons, the Cold War saw both superpowers fight to preserve their deterrent strength. When both sides had enough nuclear weapons to ensure that any nuclear strike would result in the total annihilation of both the attacker and the defence, the idea of mutually assured destruction (MAD) was born. This delicate balance of horror highlighted the possibility of utter devastation while enforcing a paradoxical sort of stability in which the weapons' own destructiveness served as a disincentive to employ them. The Cold War involved not just military and economic tactics but also a struggle for people's hearts and minds. To support their own ideologies and undermine their rivals, both sides waged protracted propaganda operations. The United States attempted to demonstrate the advantages of democracy and capitalism by showcasing the wealth, scientific achievements, and individual liberties enjoyed in the West through organisations like the Voice of America and cultural diplomacy. While this was going on, the Soviet Union highlighted the injustices and inequities present in capitalist nations and promoted communism as the real route to social justice and human freedom through its state-run media and worldwide communist organisations. The rivalry between the superpowers in technology also served as a distinguishing characteristic of the Cold War. The Space Race, in which the US and the USSR competed for supremacy in space exploration, may have best exemplified this. Significant turning points that first established the Soviet Union as leaders in this new frontier were the Soviet Union's 1957 launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, and Yuri Gagarin's historic space flight in 1961. In response, the US reaffirmed its commitment to space exploration, which culminated in the Apollo moon landings, which many saw as a sign of both technological and ideological triumph. The domains of culture and society were also impacted by the Cold War. Periods of extreme anti-communist feeling were common in the West due to the fear of communist infiltration; the McCarthy era in the US is one example, when suspected communists and sympathisers were actively probed and frequently punished. On the other hand, opposition to the communist government in the Eastern Bloc was greeted with just as severe suppression, as seen by the suppression of the Hungarian Uprising in 1956 and the Prague Spring in 1968. Numerous regional wars and crises challenged both countries' resolve and methods throughout the Cold War. The world came dangerously close to a direct clash between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. These wars, which were frequently waged through proxies, highlighted the importance of the Cold War on a worldwide scale and the readiness of both sides to make great sacrifices in order to maintain their ideological positions. The Soviet Union's disintegration in 1991 marked the end of the Cold War as a result of both internal forces and external factors. The Soviet bloc broke up as a result of political reform efforts led by Mikhail Gorbachev, such as glasnost and perestroika, as well as continuous independence campaigns by former Soviet satellite governments.
