Partisan politics are especially likely to turn off young Americans. Nowadays, a large number of Americans under thirty identify as Independents rather than Democrats or Republicans. Rather than associating themselves with a single political party, young Americans are become more preoccupied with particular topics, including same-sex marriage. Voters who focus their decisions just on one subject are unlikely to cast their ballots depending on party allegiance. The perception among younger Americans that politicians do not often address problems that are pertinent to their life was another factor contributing to the low youth voter turnout in previous elections. Younger people get disinterested in campaigns when they cannot connect to the concerns being raised, such as pensions for seniors. When Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders raised concerns about the expense of college and even offered free tuition for first-year students at public universities, this situation partly shifted in 2016. Across the nation, college campuses overwhelmingly favoured Senator Sanders. Following the defeat of his candidature campaign, the youthful voter fervour subsided. Young people did not gravitate towards Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as much as they did towards Sanders, even though she ultimately raised the topic of free tuition. There was a decrease in voter turnout and a lesser percentage of youth votes cast for Clinton in the general election, which was won by Republican contender Donald Trump. Youth felt engaged with candidates again in 2020, which encouraged involvement all through election season. During the general election period, Sanders, Biden, and Harris all sparked attention once more. Debt from student loans was a major campaign topic. While some Americans find partisanship objectionable in general, others find one of the main parties' ideologies—established values and beliefs that influence political policy—dispelling. This is particularly valid for younger people. While ideological polarisation has occurred on both sides of the political spectrum, young people who do identify with one of the major parties have recently tended to favour the Democratic Party as some Republican Party members have become more ideologically conservative (e.g., opposing same-sex marriage, legalising certain drugs, immigration reform, gun control, and the separation of church and state). In a 2015 Harvard study of Americans under thirty, a greater proportion of respondents tended to see Democrats in Congress favourably than Republicans, and 61 percent of younger voters supported the Democratic ticket in the 2020 election. In comparison to elder Republicans, even younger Americans who identify as Republicans are more liberal on topics like immigration reform and same-sex marriage. It's also possible that younger Republicans are more open to seeing commonalities between Democrats and themselves. Reiterating the previous point, voting for members of a certain party does not always indicate support for its policies. Even among college students who want to vote, there are other reasons why they might not visit the polls. It might be challenging for young Americans to register to vote because a large number of them attend schools and institutions outside of their home states. Students might not have a state-issued ID in locations where it is necessary, or they might not be granted one if they are unable to provide proof of paying in-state tuition. In addition to age, other characteristics that influence the chance of someone getting involved in politics include money and education. Like previous elections, more people reported being frequent voters in 2020, and this trend continued as income and education levels rose. People's level of political participation is also influenced by their level of fervour for contemporary political problems. Sadly, public opinion surveys only reveal people's implicit preferences or opinions, which is why politicians may use them to guide legislation or determine how to vote on topics. Latent preferences change over time and are not strongly retained. When someone is posed a subject about which they don't really have an opinion, they could even form spontaneously, which means they might not even accurately reflect their genuine sentiments. Voting itself, in fact, may just represent a latent preference because voters might be indifferent to a political candidate or subject. Intense preferences, on the other hand, are founded on strong emotions about a topic that a person consistently sticks to. Individuals with strong opinions have a tendency to get more involved in politics; they are more likely to attend political events and provide both cash and time to campaigns. One is more likely to have strong preferences and engage in politics the wealthier and more educated they are.
