IV- Pontic design & material Requirements of ideal pontic 1- It should restore the function of the missing tooth efficiently 2- It should satisfy the esthetic demands 3- It should be strong enough to withstand the occlusal load accumulation 4- It should be hygienic & allow adequate sanitation to prevent plaque 5- Constructed from a biologically accepted material 1- Material of the pontic: before) - Porcelain, gold alloy, base metal alloy & Acrylic resin (Discussed as porcelain, N.B: surface finish is important as well as the type of the material used surface metal or acrylic panties show plaque accumulation with unfinished 2- Design of the pontic out the oral - The proper design should allow the patient to efficiently clean & carry hygiene measures (adequate sanitation) a) Gingival surface soft tissue - It is the most important surface of the pantie as it is in relation to ✓ The pantie should have passive contact (just touching) with the ridge ge of dental floss N.B: If heavy contact (blanching)>> gingival irritation+ prevent passa ✓ The pontic should meet the tissue in a minimal area of contact ✓ e The pantie should meet the tissue with rounded & highly smooth surfac ✓ tion The pantie should not be too far from the ridge to avoid food stagna ✓ The dental floss should pass easily between the pantie & the ridge --- --- --- --- --- --- -.. .q, tl~,r Cons iaera tions ---"-•~ -:,~ b) Occlusal surface of the pontic Regarding the bucco-lingual width of the occlusa I t bl 3 concepts exist: a e, ~~ =- o Normal bucco-lingual width >> so occlusa 1t bl of the pontic is in a e functional harmony with the occlusion of the oppo sing teeth . . o Decreased bucco-lln gual width by 1\3 or 1\5 on th e expense of the lingual surface >> this is claimed to decrease forces on pontics >> so decreased forces on abutments N.B: BUT narrowing occlusal table may lead to: • Affect development of harmonious & stab le occlusal relationship • Excessive widening of lingual embrasure >> which may affe ct the hygienic point of view o Changing the occlusal dimension has a little sign ificance as recent researches point out the important of proprioceptive mechanism in regulating the occlusal force regardless the dime nsion of occlusal table Cas es requiring decrease of the occlusal tables of pontics: 1- Cantilever bridge restoring missing upper 4 >> palatal cusp is removed to decrease the load 2- Cantilever bridge restoring upper last molar >> pantie dimension is decreased mesio-distal to act only as vertical stopper c) Facial & lingual surfaces of the pontic • For anterior panties >> it should reproduce the natural tooth form & color e.g modified ridge lap or ovate (esthetics) • For posterior pontics >> non anatomic gingival converging contour e.g conical (bullet), sanitary or modified sanitary (hygiene) ------------------------10 ---> treatment of M-D mobility is easier than B-Lg mobility which need additional abutments • The degree of mobility >> treatment of low grade mobility is easier than higher grades which need additional abutments • The amount of remaining bone >> The loss of more bone support indicates the need of more additional abutments • The location of the mobile tooth in the ach >> upper 2 can be splinted by upper 3 only while lower 6 must be splinted with 5 & 7 -------------------m.l Consilerations--....... t~ --------------11--------------w, r.•• ;; \ L \ \ N.B: Never splin t before occlusal .
