English 1010 Final Cover Letter December 13, 2019 Hello Final Portfolio Reviewers, 1.) My reading strategies have changed over this semester, through projects like the RA and OpEd, having to research more for these papers changed how I take notes and gather evidence from sources. One of the most beneficial reading strategies I have learned is how to effectively read an abstract to determine if a source would be beneficial for my research. 2.) Designing my Expos and Op-Ed have taught me how to digitally create an essay that pairs well with photographs and other digital design elements. Creating a visually appealing design for these papers allowed me the opportunity to practice pairing relevant visual aids with my own writing. 3.) Yes. This course has helped me refine my writing skills as well as explore new types or writing like the Expos utilizing paraphrase and the Op-Ed with its journalistic writing style. English 1010 has been a great stepping stone from high school into the world of college writing. 4.) I think that I personally benefited most in the revision process with one on one time with the professor. Peer review is helpful to an extent but sitting down and examining my papers paragraph by paragraph was the most beneficial. If I had more time to work on my final portfolio I do not think I would make any other changes, I am happy with my progress in the class and work resulting in my effort. 5.) I think that my op-ed would work well in the Branding Iron here on campus. The style it is written in and the subject I talk about, removing recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in Public Schools seems like the type of editorial that could be featured in the publication. However, I think that my Op-Ed would do well in other editorial sections in publications like Buzzfeed News or MSNBC. 6.) This course has helped me develop more of a personal style with my writing. Before this course, I was not completed sure how to write outside of an academic tone but projects like the Op-Ed pushed me to write outside of my comfort zone and I am satisfied with my results. Moving forward, I would like to try and write from a journalistic or personal side more often, and continue to develop my writing tone.
