TABLE OF CONTENTS This will appear in the front of the book and list all sections and which page numbers each section covers. Also ties into theme. COPY This is the text that appears on the pages of the yearbook. This includes the yearbook article, the headlines, and captions. Alternative copy refers to copy that does not fall into those categories, such as scoreboards, Top 10 lists, and Student Profiles. COVER The front and back and spine of the yearbook. This is where the school name, theme, year and personalization appear. SPINE Area of the yearbook connecting the front and back covers. The name of the school, the name of the yearbook, the volume number, the city and state, and the year are all featured on the spine. COVERAGE Refers both to the topics featured on individual spreads and how the topics are highlighted. For example, typical coverage in a student life section would include summer, the first day of school and homecoming. In addition, typical homecoming coverage would include photos, copy and captions detailing the event. SECTION A traditional yearbook is broken up into six sections: Academics, People, Student Life, Ads, Clubs, and Athletics. These sections are used as organizational tools for the staff and the readers. SPIN-OFFS Creative, alternative titles for the yearbook sections that relate to the theme and give the book variety. DIVIDER These spreads separate sections of the book such as Academics, Sports, People, Student Life, Clubs, and Ads. All dividers will follow the same layout but be customized for the specific section. This also ties into the theme. SPREAD, DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD, OR DPS Two facing or side by side pages in the yearbook. ENDSHEET These appear on the inside of the front and back covers. They can be left blank or be designed to follow the theme. FOLIO This appears in the lower outside corners or each page and may include the following: page number, photo credits, page credits, or section INDEX This appears in the back of the book and will list all students in alphabetical order along with the page numbers they appear on. GRAPHICS This includes anything other than text that appears on the page. Photos, clip-art, logos, scanned in art all will categorized as graphics. LADDER You will not find the ladder in the book. The ladder is an organizational tool on which the entire book is laid out – page by page. This also breaks the book into signatures and multiples and lists all deadlines SIGNATURE/MULTIPLE A signature is a set of 16 pages. A multiple is a set of 8 pages within a signature, color is applied in multiples. FOUR COLOR Printing in magenta (reddishpink), cyan (blue), yellow and black. All combine to create fullcolor pictures. THEME The theme is the key to the book!! This should reflect in some way the school and students. It will carry throughout the book and should be evident on every single page. Themes are both visual (with graphics, colors, and fonts) and verbal (theme slogans, spin offs, etc.) TITLE PAGE This is the very first page of the book which includes the school name, address, phone number, book volume number, etc. THEME COPY A double page spread at the beginning of the book that explains the theme, the meaning of the theme, and its significance to the school year.
