Provide2 facts that you take from Chapters 1 and/or 4 and/or the PowerPoint on Diversity that help you make the case why for we need to educate teachers and administrators about how to best educate non-native speakers of English. a. Els are at risk of dropping out of school due to unfamiliar content instruction added on to a new culture and language. b. Many EL’s may have done really well academically in their mother tongue, however due to the expectation to learn in English they are often documented to be below their current grade level. 2. Describe the following terms in your own words: a. first generation immigrant An adult immigrant born and educated in a foreign country coming to another country with competency in their mother tongue (L1). b. second generation immigrant Child of 1st generation immigrants born and educated in the U.S. Generally, is dominantly fluent in English unless their mother tongue is kept up at home. c. generation 1.5 immigrant A childhood immigrant born and educated in a foreign country. May have partially been educated in their home country. Is either competent in only the mother tongue or a second language as well. d. parachute children Children who migrate alone, usually to pursue educational opportunities. CH 1 & 4 2 3. Provide3 examples of ways that teachers can enhance respect for student diversity in their classrooms when non-native speakers of English suddenly join the class. a. Integrate EL’s culture into lessons, when possible, b. Rotate partners for projects with a mix of native and non-native speakers. c. Have name tags around the room on everyday items with the EL’s L1 on it naming each item. TRANSFER QUESTIONS 1. What is themost striking piece of information you gained from reviewing Chapters 1 and 4? Not all EL students are immigrants. Why? Oftentimes, due to media it is thought that anyone coming to America is trying to escape something or did not get a good education. However, there are many students out there who come from good homes and education and just want to expand on it or study abroad. These expectations can lead to students being judged or misdiagnosed within the public school system. 2. Which 2 arguments would you use after learning about the content in Chapters 1 and 4 to convince a colleague about the need to accommodate ELs in the regular classroom? a. EL students who are given lower expectations lose confidence in themselves in school. If given the chance, EL students gradually learn to accept their new challenges and adapt to their new environment. b. Like every student within the general ed classroom, El students have diverse needs and are at different levels of proficiency in their reading and fluency.
