EXPONENT PROPERTIES: product of powers: add exponents of the same base when multiplying powers. x^a * x^b = x^(a+b) quotient of powers: subtract exponents of the same base when dividing powers. x^a / x^b = x^(a-b) negative exponent: reciprocate the base of a negative exponent and change the sign of the exponent to simplify. x^(-a) = 1 / x^a power of a power: multiply exponents when a power is raised to a power. (x^a)^b = x^(ab) power of a product: raise each factor of the product to the power when raising a product to a power (xy)^a = x^a * y^a power of a quotient: raise the numerator and denominator to a power when raising a quotient to a power (x/y)^a = x^a / y^a zero power: any base with an exponent of zero is equivalent to one. x^0 = 1 rational exponents: x^(1/a) = a√x x^(a/b) = b√(x^a) = (b√x)^a
