Storytelling with Data What is Data Storytelling? Data Storytelling is a skill that combines data, visuals, and narrative to communicate data insights and frames broader implications. With data storytelling, we deliver messages and not just about our work. If an insight isn’t understood and isn’t compelling, no one will act on it and no change will occur. Why Data Storytelling? Some reason why we need data storytelling:  Your tools don't know exactly which one is the story.  Stories are memorable and viral.  Rather than nitpicking over the details, people want to see where the story leads them.  People hear statistics, but they feel stories. How To Tell Story With Data? 1. Know Your Audience 2. Determine What Data Matters 3. Find and Organize Your Insight 4. Construct Your Storyline Know Your Audience Who is your audience?  The Driver, who sets the pace and pushes things forward (Ex. Product Manager)  The Approver, who decides whether the outcome is acceptable (Ex. Tribe Tech Lead)  The Contributor, who contributes to the end-to-end activity (Ex. Business Users)  The Informed, who needs to be aware of the activity and the outcome (Ex. Management) Determine What Data Matters 1. Define your starting point by observing a causal link or a correlation in a dataset. 2. See for a pattern, an outlier, a peak, etc. that leads you to a theme/topic for your analysis. 3. Identify the data that can inform the topics you'll want to explore instead of looking at all the possible data available. 4. It is okay to go back and forth when filtering data, but make sure all of the correspond to your topics. Find and Organize Your Insight 1. Find any relationships and always dig deep into the relationships between any relevant data. 2. Interpret the meaning out of all the data relationships. 3. Organize the insights based on criteria. Criteria for a good insight: 1. Big Statistically or numerically significant Example: About 70% of Indonesian SME do not have a website. 2. Useful Actionable, audience understand what they should do next. Example: TikTok Ads is the most efficient marketing channel 3. Surprising New information, not too obvious. Example: Transactions from website contributes to 2,000 transactions per minute. Construct Your Storyline Who is your audience? 1. Plot What context is essential, 2. Twist What is interesting about the data and what it shows? 3. Ending What do you want your audience to do?  Plot : The downtrend of work performance  Twist: Performance downtrend happened after 2 employee quit  Ending: need 2 replacement to improve the performance
