Zeroes: o Start of a number – never. o Middle of a number – always. o End of a number – sometimes.  With decimal point – always.  No decimal point – never. Multiplication/Division: o Answer has the same number of significant figures as the original number with the fewest significant figures. o Conversion factors are exact, so they don’t count. Addition/Subtraction: o Answer has the same number of decimal places as the original number with the fewest decimal places. Rounding: If the first dropped digit is: Less than 5 …then: Drop it and all remaining digits. More than 5 Round up by 1. If the digit removed is 5 followed by zeroes or nothing, the preceding number increases by 1 if odd or remains unchanged if even. If the 5 is followed by another nonzero (1-9), round up always. Carry 2 or more additional sig figs through multistep calculations and round off the final answer only. METRIC SYSTEM Units are related to the base unit by a power of 10.
