Elements of Nonfiction What is nonfiction? Nonfiction is writing about real people, places, and events. What are the two categories on nonfiction? informational nonfiction literary nonfiction What is informational nonfiction? Informational nonfiction provides factual information only. Examples: textbooks, encyclopedias, pamphlets, etc. Informational nonfiction books usually contain table of contents, index, pictures with captions, maps, charts, diagrams, etc What is literary nonfiction? Literary nonfiction is written to be read like a fiction story; however, the story contains actual people, places, and events. Everything is true. Types of literary nonfiction Autobiography Biography What is an autobiography? An autobiography is a true story about a person’s life written by that same person. Examples: memoirs, diaries, journals What is a biography? A biography is a true story about someone’s life written by someone else. Who is a biographer? A biographer is a person who write a biography by interviewing that person, reading diaries, etc. What is an essay? An essay is a short piece of writing that deals with one subject.
