Plymouth Colony The Pilgrims Arrive “Who settled in Plymouth Colony?” • Settled in 1620 by a group called the Puritans • They were looking for a place to practice their religion without being persecuted • Persecute – Unfair punishment because of a persons beliefs • These Puritans became known as the Pilgrims “Where was Plymouth located?” • Plymouth was located in present day Massachusetts • Eventually became the colony of Massachusetts “What was the government like in Plymouth?” • In order for the settlement to be successful the Pilgrims wrote a plan for governing the settlement before they left their ship the Mayflower • This Plan was called the Mayflower Compact Compact – A promise made between a group of people “How did the Mayflower Compact work?” • Everyone that was on the boat had to sign the document before getting off the boat to strengthen their community “What part did the Mayflower Compact play in the formation of the United States Government?” • Ideas written in the Mayflower Compact are still present in US government today 1. The idea that government would be trusted to make just and equal laws for the good of the colony, is an idea that is present in the US Constitution 2. Direct Democracy – all men received a vote of laws and majority would rule, today the US government is still a democracy (government ran by its citizens) 3. Town meetings were held to discuss important issues, towns and cities still hold council meetings across the United States Success of Jamestown and Plymouth • Lead to the creation of the 13 original colonies • Each individual colony had its own governor and elected legislature • For the most part as long as Great Britain was making money off of the colonies they were allowed to become successful and govern themselves
