Domestic Politics and Policy Chapter 27 Section 3 Truman’s Domestic Policy • Truman seemed unprepared to be President • 1st priority was reconversion • Prices rose 25 percent but wages stayed the same – leads to widespread strikes • Taft‐Hartley Act – 80 day cooling off period – limit strikes • Truman’s Fair Deal – extension of FDR’s New Deal – met with opposition by conservatives • 1946 election – Republicans take control of both houses – Truman met with opposition • Truman an advocate for civil rights – blocked by Congress • Ends segregation of armed forces and discrimination of hiring federal employees Election of 1948 • Truman decides to run for reelection – underdog • Conservative Democrats (States’ Rights) – J. Strom Thurmond • Liberal Democrats (Progressives) – Henry Wallace • Republican – Thomas Dewey • Truman campaigned against the “do nothing” Republican Congress • Truman losing in every poll pulls the upset – Democrats also take control of Congress • Fair Deal had marginal success however • 22nd Amendment passed with no opposition – Presidential term limits • Even able to run Truman decides not to in 1952 Eisenhower and the Republican Approach • “I like Ike” – war hero promises to bring an end to Korean War, Communism, and Corruption (K1C2) • Running mate Richard Nixon accused of corruption – but Nixon spins disaster to Republicans benefit – checkers speech • Eisenhower wins and Reps take control of Congress • Eisenhower more of a patient leader as opposed to authoritative • Wins reelection easily in 1956 • Modern Republicanism – conservative when dealing with money, liberal when dealing with human beings • Favored big business • Although economy failed – remained stable • NASA and National Defense Education Act
