Evidence of Evolution – Study Guide
1. Fossil Record
Shows how organisms changed over time. Older fossils are simpler; newer ones are more complex.
Transitional fossils link species.
2. Homologous Structures
Same structure, different function (e.g., human arm, whale fin). Indicates common ancestry.
3. Analogous Structures
Different structure, same function (e.g., bird vs insect wings). Does NOT indicate common ancestry.
4. Vestigial Structures
Body parts with little or no function (e.g., appendix). Remnants of ancestors.
5. DNA Evidence
Similar DNA means organisms are closely related. Humans share ~98–99% DNA with
chimpanzees.
6. Embryology
Similar embryo development suggests common ancestry.
7. Biogeography
Distribution of species based on location; isolation leads to different evolution.
