Transcendentalism in Action Objective: Students will analyze extended primary source excerpts from Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, evaluate how Transcendentalist ideas shaped American literature, and connect those ideas to reform movements and modern culture. Part 1: Concept Review Define the following terms in your own words: 1. Individualism - The belief that each person is unique and should think and act for themselves instead of just following others. 2. Self-reliance - Relying on your own abilities and beliefs instead of depending on society or other people. 3. Intuition - Trusting your inner feelings or instincts to understand what is right or true. 4. Connection to nature - The belief that nature helps people understand themselves and the world better. *Short Response: Which of these ideas feels most relevant in American culture today? Explain why in 3–4 sentences. The idea that feels most relevant today is individualism. In American culture people are often encouraged to be themselves and follow their own beliefs. Social media and self-expression show how important individuality is today. Many people also value speaking their minds and not just following what others think. Part 2: Extended Primary Source Analysis Primary Source A: Ralph Waldo Emerson – Self-Reliance (1841) “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine providence has found for you; the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events. Great men have always done so, and confided themselves childlike to the genius of their age. Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world.” Analysis Questions: 1. What does Emerson mean when he says, 'Trust thyself'? He means people should believe in their own thoughts and feelings instead of relying on what others say. 2. Why does Emerson believe nonconformity is important? He believes people should not always follow society’s rules because real progress comes from people who think differently. 3. How does this passage challenge traditional religious authority? It suggests that people should trust their own mind and personal connection to truth instead of only listening to religious leaders. 4. How might these ideas encourage reform movements such as abolition or women’s rights? These ideas encourage people to stand up for what they believe is right even if society disagrees. Reformers could follow their conscience and fight against injustice. 5. Do you agree or disagree with Emerson’s emphasis on individual conscience over society? Explain. I mostly agree because sometimes society can be wrong. People who trust their conscience can help create change and improve the world. However, it is still important to consider other people’s ideas too. Primary Source B: Henry David Thoreau – Walden (1854) “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary.” Analysis Questions: 1. What does Thoreau mean by 'live deliberately'? He means living carefully and thoughtfully instead of just going through life without thinking. 2. Why does Thoreau choose nature instead of society? He believes nature helps people focus on what is truly important and understand life better. 3. How does this reflect Transcendentalist beliefs about intuition and self-reliance? It shows that people can learn truth by thinking for themselves and connecting with nature instead of relying on society. 4. In what ways does this critique industrializing American society? It criticizes the busy and materialistic lifestyle that came with industrialization and suggests people focus more on simple living. 5. How might this philosophy influence modern environmental movements? It encourages people to respect and protect nature because it is important for human life and understanding. Part 3: Modern Connection Modern Parallel Identify a modern movement, trend, or cultural figure that reflects Transcendentalist ideas (examples: environmental activism, self-help culture, social media “authenticity,” civil disobedience protests). You may research the internet for this! Explain: What Transcendentalist idea is present? Explain how it relates. How is it similar or different? Does this show Transcendentalism still influences American culture? Explain how. One modern movement that reflects Transcendentalist ideas is environmental activism. The main idea present is the connection to nature. Activists believe nature is important and should be protected, which is similar to what Thoreau believed when he lived at Walden. The difference is that today people use protests, organizations, and social media to spread their message. This shows that Transcendentalist ideas still influence American culture because many people still believe nature is valuable and worth protecting. Transcendentalism influenced American literature by encouraging writers to focus on individual thought, nature, and personal truth. Writers like Emerson and Thoreau believed people should trust themselves and not just follow society. In Self-Reliance, Emerson says people should “trust thyself,” which shows the importance of believing in your own ideas. These beliefs also helped inspire reform movements like abolition and women’s rights because people felt they should stand up for what they believed was morally right. Transcendentalist ideas also encouraged a strong connection to nature, which influenced environmental thinking. Overall, Transcendentalism helped shape American writing and encouraged people to challenge injustice and improve society.
