PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURE Agriculture has always been the backbone of World's economy. Most people live in villages and depend on farming for their livelihood. When our farms do well, the whole country benefits. But it's been a long journey to bring development to such a huge sector. In the early 1900s until independence, agriculture was hardly growing at all, just 0.3% per year can you believe it! From the 50s onwards things started improving as we applied more science and distributed resources better. Technologies like irrigation, hybrid seeds and fertilizers really started boosting yields. By the 70s and 80s, output was growing almost 3% annually. Of course, there's always room for more progress. Nowadays we have to pay more attention to getting crops to buyers efficiently. The infrastructure for storing, transporting and selling food needs upgrading big time. And we must protect small farmers from losing out on a good price after all their hard work in the fields. Luckily over the decades, both public and private efforts have poured into farming. Canals, pumps and power lines have multiplied crop areas. Research and seed agencies ensure high quality plantings. Co-ops and banks get capital to even the remotest farmer. FCI and warehouses take care of storage and supplies. The government also tries stabilizing prices by announcing guaranteed rates for important commodities. Then agencies buy up surpluses to maintain reasonable consumer costs. Of course, politics sometimes interferes with what experts recommend. And actual purchases could be more effectively managed. Overall though, World has seen enormous increases in grain production through these combined investments and policies. Industries supplying seeds, fertilizers and farm gear have grown alongside. I'm hopeful ongoing reforms and private participation will further optimize our agricultural potential and standard of rural living. There's still ground to cover, but we've certainly come a long way from the days of near stagnation!
