What information would you release, and what information would you not release? Justify your claims. One of the potential risks to releasing the profile to the public is that the person could change how and where they commit their crimes, their modus operandi. Criminals, like Kuklinski learned and experimented with methods of murder and modes of body disposal. Psychopaths can possess intelligence since it has been said intelligence could “be a factor that increases the destructive potential of people with psychopathic traits” (Moraga et. al., 2019). Also, “Most psychopaths are skilled at camouflage through deception and manipulation, as well as stalking and locating areas where there is an endless supply of victims” (Babiak et.al., 2017). Psychopaths can hide in plain sight. Releasing information allows the psychopath to gauge what law enforcement knows. This could warn the psychopath to be more cunning, craftier, more devious, and inventive in covering their behavior. Another risk of releasing a profile to the public is that not all psychopaths are psychotic. Some function in society without incident. You don’t want to stigmatize those functioning psychopaths that have shown themselves to be an asset in their field. These functioning psychopaths may not be psychotic, so you don’t want to lump everyone as criminal. Lastly, you don’t want to create an atmosphere of fear and paranoia that people are looking for psychopaths at every turn, trying to diagnose their family, friends, and/or peers. You do not want to create a panic that feeds on people’s fears. You want to minimize and alleviate peoples’ worries while also not giving a psychopath any more fuel to continue their deviant behavior. I would release general information about a psychopathic individual. I would provide enough information to make people aware and cautious without giving so much information that an atmosphere of distrust and paranoia hampers everyday life functions. I would not divulge specifics about any crime committed by a psychotic psychopath or any criminal. Any information that only the psychopathic murderer would know should be withheld. This way law enforcement can gauge the honesty and integrity of any informants and/or perpetrator during the investigative process. You also don’t want to create false memories in anyone with psychiatric illnesses and issues who may then claim to have committed these crimes. This could lead to false arrests and/or convictions. This would allow the guilty to continue victimizing others resulting in a miscarriage of justice. It is incredibly important to be aware and cautious when dealing with psychopathy. Every person is different, and each case needs to be assessed individually on its own merits. Remember, “Psychopathy is a syndrome—a cluster of related symptoms” (Hare, 2012, p. 34). However, not every psychopath shares the exact same cluster of related symptoms. Each psychopath has his/her own genetic and environmental factors that have contributed to the making of that individual. It is also important to warn the public that psychopaths are unpredictable so they should refrain from attempting to diagnose, treat, and/or confront any psychopath but most especially a psychotic psychopath.
