California became part of the Mexican Empire in 1822. What started a real estate boom in Ventura County? The extension of the Southern Pacific Railroad to San Buenaventura started a real estate boom. When and why was San Buenaventura shortened to Ventura in 1887? San Buenaventura was shortened to Ventura in 1887 for convenience in printing timetables by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The oil industry in Ventura County struggled at first with failed drilling efforts but became successful in the early 1900s, especially with the Ventura Avenue oil field, which greatly helped the local economy. What was the largest single disaster in Ventura County History? The largest single disaster was the collapse of the St. Francis Dam. What physical ‘landmark’ separates East and West Ventura County? Which part of the county is Moorpark in? The Conejo Grade separates East and West Ventura County. Moorpark is in East Ventura County. The High Street Pepper Trees would also be a good field trip because it is local to Moorpark. Use the Case Study: St. Francis Dam (California, 1928) to answer questions 21-25 This tragedy has been mentioned twice already in Questions 8 and 15 so first and foremost, describe what the purpose of the dam was. The St. Francis Dam was built to provide a storage reservoir for the Los Angeles Aqueduct system. Note that the dam was built in Los Angeles County, but is the largest disaster in Ventura County history. Why? The water broke through the dam and into Ventura County, which was where most of the damage took place. Who was the engineer in charge of the project? The engineer in charge was William Mulholland. What were the failures of the dam? It was poorly designed, raised too high without proper checks, and lacked safety measures. What was the final result for the engineer and the Department of Water and Power.
