The Organization Function Design of the Organizational Structure Basic Concepts - Organize: Configure and structure work in a defined way in order to achieve organizational goals. - Organizational structure: Formal arrangement of jobs within an organization. - Organization chart: Visual representation of the organizational structure. - Organizational design: Creation or modification of the organizational structure. Elements of Organizational Design - Job specialization: Division of work activities into specific tasks for different jobs. Its purpose is to increase productivity and quality of work, making use of the various skills that employees possess. There is a limit point where specialization stops increasing productivity. - Departmentalization: Way in which work activities are grouped in a specific area or department. They can be classified by function (functional), geographic location (geography), by product line (products), by processes, customers or by division. Related to this, several companies use cross functional team, that is, a work team made up of individuals from various functional specialties. - Chain of command: Line of authority that extends from the highest to the lowest hierarchical levels. Helps specify who reports to whom. The following 3 concepts are very important for your understanding: * Authority: Right that empowers those who hold a managerial position to command subordinates, and for them to fulfill their function. Could be line authority, directing the work of an employee or personnel authority, backing, supporting and advising those who hold line authority. * Responsibility: Obligation or expectation to comply with the obligation that was assigned. * ORCommand Unit: Principle that determines that each worker must report only to one boss/management to avoid confusion. - Control Section: Number of employees that a manager guides efficiently and effectively. This depends on the skills of the manager and workers. If it is managed in broader sections, it is relevant that employees know the tasks and organizational processes well. - Centralization and Decentralization: Centralization is the degree where decision-making is carried out at the highest hierarchical levels, while in decentralization, lower levels participate in it. The latter is linked to employee empowerment, which gives workers more power to make decisions. - Formalization: Level of standardization of jobs within an organization and degree to which the actions of workers are regulated by rules. From this it follows that a formal structure is marked by the hierarchical position, while the informal one arises from friendship, affinity or common intentions.
