Drafting the U.S. Constitution – Historical Lenses Historical lenses can bring definitive differences in the way that someone perceives that specific historical event. Whether the lenses be Political, Social, or Economic each form can portray a topic in very different ways; all of which could prove to be important. Determining which historical lense this book was using, I found it to be difficult. I think the use of direct quotes from Primary Sources made it very fact based. However, I believe that this book mainly uses Political and Economic lenses. The fact-based narrative revolved mainly around the drafting of the constitution and the circumstances leading up to finalization of the constitution. For instance, one excerpt reads, “Hamilton warned that rejection of the impost would lead to the loss of our national character, the dissolution of the Union, war among the states, and war with all the great powers of Europe.” (Meyerson, 2009) I think this quote reflects writing in a political and economic historical lense. Additionally, another excerpt says, “He told Jefferson that such a veto was necessary in order for the national government to be able to defend itself against state encroachment and, as an added advantage, prevent states from harming other states and even local political minorities.” (Meyerson, 2009) This to me is written both in political and economic historical lenses again. It reflects a core backbone from what our country both politically and economically is set up from.
