Pros and Cons of Interest Groups, Lobbyists, and Corporations Lobbyists are people who work to influence government decisions on behalf of special interest groups. They can be a powerful force for good, helping to ensure that the voices of these groups are heard in the halls of power. Some of the pros of lobbyists include; they can help ensure that the voices of special interest groups are heard in government (Dür, 2018). Additionally, they can help to build relationships between government officials and the people they represent. Lastly, they can help to hold government officials accountable for their actions. Some of the cons of lobbyists may include; they can be a source of corruption, using their influence to secure favorable treatment for their clients at the expense of the public interest. Also, they can create an unequal playing field, giving some groups an unfair advantage over others (Dür, 2018). Lastly, they can be a distraction from the real work of government, focusing attention on the interests of a few rather than the needs of the many. The question of whether former members of Congress should be allowed to become lobbyists is a complicated one. There are pros and cons to this issue. On the one hand, some people argue that former members of Congress have valuable experience and knowledge that they can use to help companies lobby for favorable legislation (Briscoe et al., 2018). On the other hand, some people argue that allowing former members of Congress to become lobbyists creates a potential conflict of interest. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to allow former members of Congress to become lobbyists is up to each individual.
