At the beginning of chapter 3, what has Slim gifted Lennie with? At the beginning of chapter 3, Slim gives Lennie a puppy. 2. When Slim innocently calls Lennie a "cuckoo," how does George react? George reacts to Slim calling Lennie a “cuckoo” by stating, “He ain’t no cuckoo,” said George. “He’s dumb as hell, but he ain’t crazy.” 3. Who shoots Candy's dog? Carlson shoots Candy’s dog. 4. Why does he shoot Candy's dog? Carlson shoots Candy’s dog because Candy succumbs to pressure from all the men in the bunkhouse, including Slim who suggests that Candy would be putting a suffering animal out if its misery. Slim offers him a puppy and urges him to let Carlson shoot the dog. Candy is also afraid of losing his job if all the men were to complain about the smelly old dog. 5. When Curley is trying to hit him, Lennie catches his fist and hangs on squeezing his fists so hard that it looks like every bone in his fist is broken. 10. George panics when he realizes he and Lennie will probably be fired now. What does Slim do to help? Slim smiled wryly and knelt down beside Curley and said, “You got your senses in hand enough to listen?” he asked.
