Business Management Tasks Task 4 September 19, 2021 Managerial Communications The four key barriers to communication are process barriers, personal barriers, physical barriers, and semantic barriers. Recognizing and overcoming these barriers are essential to effectively communicate with others in the workplace. Process Barriers are difficulties that occur anywhere in the communication process. Not understanding text abbreviations in an email, messages getting lost in the recipient's inbox, or failure to speak, for fear of criticism. These are all examples of barriers that could disrupt the communication process. It is important that communication is a two-way exchange in all business interactions, as it is more accurate and efficient. As a manager, I would identify the purpose of my message, evaluate the receiver, and how they will decode my message. I will then actively listen to any feedback from the receiver. If I have not received any feedback from the receiver, I will follow up with them to make sure they understood my message. Personal Barriers to communication are attitudes that can be changed. Having employees from different generations will create personal/age barriers. The younger employees think the older employees are stuck in their ways and inefficient. The older employees think the younger generations are lazy. As a manager, I will take the time to learn and understand the backgrounds of all employees. I will treat each employee as an individual and not as a member of a group or stereotype, and will strongly encourage all employees to do the same. Physical Barriers- Physical distractions, distance, or technology that disrupts communication. The pandemic put distance between employees from every company causing physical barriers everywhere. Adults are working from home, children are going to school from home, and the dogs are excited to have everyone home to play with all day everyday. Video conferencing has provided the bridge to connect everyone together from their homes as they were once before. As a manager, making sure I stay in communication with employees is vital, whether a phone call, virtual call, or email. Semantic Barriers- The words we use, how we use them, the meaning we attach, and the interpretation. Examples of semantic barriers are bad expressions, technical jargon, faulty translations, unclarified assumptions,etc. Messages are sometimes written under the assumption that the receiver will understand the message. If the receiver doesn’t understand the message, then a barrier is created based on an assumption. As a manager, I would ensure that all messages are molded to the levels of the recipient's understanding.
