Sikhism: Key Vocabulary: Guru Nanak: Founder; (1469-1539); composed hymns of poems, which later became the basis of Guru Granth Sahib (central text of Sikhism); focus of Sikh devotion is on the name of God. Ik onkar: One, universal, absolute God, living in all creatures. Gobind Singh: The 10th guru; declared that the sacred text of Guru Granth Sahib would be the eternal guru. Confucianism Confucius: draws on the teachings of Kung-Fuzi (551-479 BC), known to western philosophy as Confucius. Lived in a time of political difficulties, suffering exile several times; his ideas focused on social harmony and balance; his ideas were suppressed in the Qin Dynasty (and by the Communists 2,000 years later) but his ideas were promoted by the Han Dynasty and became the basis for Chinese education for centuries. Filial Piety: The honor, respect, and devotion owed to parents by children. Review: Confucius posited five constant relationships in live, the proper maintenance of which ensured social harmony: 1. Parent and child; 2. Husband and wife; 3. Siblings; 4. Friendship; 5. Ruler and subject.
