ENGR1121 – Computing Applications in Mechanical Engineering Lab Characters and Strings Lab due: end of lab Total points: 20 Labs are to be individual work. You may use MATLAB Marina, MATLAB’s help, and your notes. Lab work will be graded during lab time and working results must be shown to the lab instructor by the end of the scheduled lab time. All MATLAB programs and functions must be completed and submitted in accordance with the Computing Assignment Format and the MATLAB Coding Style. Submit an electronic copy of your lab work to the appropriate Dropbox Folder in GSU’s Folio by the end of lab. No hard copy needed unless specifically requested by the instructor. Grading Each problem will be graded according to: program design (identifying inputs/givens, process, and outputs; algorithm) and program style (program comments, variable names, proper formatted input and output including units) 25%, and program correctness 75%. Lab Work When the problem asks for true/false, use a Boolean 1 or 0 respectively. 1. (5 points) Write a function named isVowel that takes in a letter of the alphabet. It returns true if the letter is a vowel, and false if it is a consonant. You can assume that only lowercase letters will be passed into the function. Test your isVowel function from the MATLAB command window for several cases to verify the functions correct operation. 2. (5 points) Write a function named countConsonants that takes in a character string and returns the number of consonants in the string. Use the isVowel function written for Problem 1 to determine if the characters in the string are consonants or vowels. Write a test program to test your countConsonants function for three different character strings: one with no vowels, one with all vowels and one with a mixture of consonants and vowels. The strings should only contain lower case letters (no spaces and no characters other than lower case letters). 3. (5 points) Write a function isanagram that takes two strings as inputs, and returns an output as true or false depending on if the strings are anagrams or not respectively. 4. (5 points) Write a MATLAB function named countWords that will count the number of words in a string. The function should take a string and return the number of words in the string. The function should return 0 if an empty string is passed to the function. 1 Instructor: Dr. Priya Goeser
