ENGR1121 Z – Computing in Mechanical Engineering Lab Using Excel for calculations and logic expressions Lab due: end of lab Total points: 20 Labs are to be individual work. You may use the textbook, Excel’s help, and your notes. Lab work will be graded during lab time and working results must be shown to the lab instructor by the end of the scheduled lab time. All Excel Spreadsheets must be completed and submitted in accordance with the Computing Assignment Format. Submit an electronic copy of your lab work to the appropriate Dropbox Folder in GSU’s Folio by the end of lab. No hard copy needed unless specifically requested by the instructor. Grading Each problem will be graded according to: problem design (identifying inputs/givens, process, and outputs; algorithm) and program style (headers and comments, variable names, proper formatted input and output including units) 25%, and program correctness 75%. Lab problems not completed by the end of lab will receive a grade of zero. Lab Work Create an Excel Spreadsheet to do each of the following problems from the textbook. Name the Excel Spreadsheet using the following naming scheme: lastnamelab2.xlsx Create a new Worksheet within the Spreadsheet for each problem. Name the Worksheet using the following naming scheme: Problem 1 and so on 1. After a hard work week, Kirk is driving to Helen, Georgia, for a tubing trip (to cool off). Kirk drives 200 miles north from his home to Timbuktu; he then turns right and travels 400 miles east to Helen. Compute the linear distance, d, from Kirk’s home to Helen, Georgia. Note: the linear distance is the distance of the direct path between the two cities, not the total distance Kirk drove. 2. A ball is thrown straight up in the air with an initial speed of 25 m/s. Write an Excel code that determines the time it takes the ball to reach its highest point and the highest distance the ball reaches from the release point. The acceleration due to gravity is g = -9.8 m/s2 and useful formulae for projectile motion are: v= v0 + at and s =s0 + v0t + 12 at 2 . 3. For the above problem (problem 3), create a column of data for time from 0 to the time it takes the ball to reach its highest point. Compute columns of data for the velocity and distance of the ball as functions of time. Calculate the average velocity of the ball during this time. 4. Write an Excel code that determines if the solutions x1 , x2 of the equation ax 2 + bx + c = 0 will be complex or not. Hint: use the formula x = −b ± b 2 − 4ac .
