ENGR1121 – Computing Applications in Mechanical Engineering Lab Linear Algebraic Equations Lab due: end of lab Total points: 20 Labs are to be individual work. You may use MATLAB Marina, MATLAB’s help, and your notes. Lab work will be graded during lab time and working results must be shown to the lab instructor by the end of the scheduled lab time. All MATLAB programs and functions must be completed and submitted in accordance with the Computing Assignment Format and the MATLAB Coding Style. Submit an electronic copy of your lab work to the appropriate Dropbox Folder in GSU’s Folio by the end of lab. No hard copy needed unless specifically requested by the instructor. Grading Each problem will be graded according to: program design (identifying inputs/givens, process, and outputs; algorithm) and program style (program comments, variable names, proper formatted input and output including units) 25%, and program correctness 75%. Lab Work 1. (5 points) Write a MATLAB program to solve the following system of equations using Gaussian elimination. Clearly display your outputs: the solutions to x1, x2 and x3.: 𝒙𝒙𝟏𝟏 − 𝟐𝟐𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝟑𝟑𝒙𝒙𝟑𝟑 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 𝟑𝟑𝒙𝒙𝟏𝟏 + 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 −𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟑𝟑 = 𝟎𝟎 𝟐𝟐𝒙𝒙𝟏𝟏 + 𝟑𝟑𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 + 𝒙𝒙𝟑𝟑 = 𝟕𝟕 2. (5 points) Imagine that world leaders have decided to come up with a single currency for the world. This new currency, called the Eullar is defined by the following: 7 dollars and 3 euros make 71 eullars 1 dollar and 2 euros make 20 eullars Write a MATLAB program to compute and display the value of the dollar in eullars. For example, your program might display 1 dollar = 7.91 eullars. • Re-write the equations using paper and pencil to bring it to the format Ax=b. • Include these equations as comments in your program. • Clearly define A & b in the MATLAB program. Solve for x using the Gauss Elimination method. 3. (10 points) A paint company manufactures one-gallon cans of three types of ‘off white’ blends using blue, white and yellow paints. The blends have the following compositions: 1 gallon sky blend – 3 quarts of blue paint, 0.75 quart of white paint, 0.25 quart of yellow paint 1 gallon cloud blend – 1 quart of blue paint, 2.5 quarts of white paint, 0.5 quart of yellow paint 1 gallon sunshine blend – 0.5 quarts of blue paint, 0.5 quart of white paint, 3 quarts of yellow paint How many gallons of each blend can be manufactured if 7600 gallons of blue paint, 4900 gallons of white paint and 3500 gallons of yellow paint are available? Note that there are 4 quarts in one gallon. Write a MATLAB program to solve this problem. • Re-write the equations using paper and pencil to bring it to the format Ax=b. • Include these equations as comments in your program. • Clearly define A & b in the MATLAB program.
