Chapter 5: 1) Write a little bit about "chilly climates" on college campuses. The climate was created by the overt and covert behaviors of faculty, administrators, and students, including sexist humor, faculty calling on men more than women in class, and stereotypical comments about women's intellectual abilities. Think about the intersections like race, ethnicity, and class here. How far has your campus come from those days? Ask yourself this question and interview 2 friends in college here or elsewhere. What are their opinions about how equity around gender, race, and class have or have not changed on campus. Chapter 6: 2) What is the relationship between paid and unpaid work? How does unpaid work support inequality in the work force? How does paid work support inequality in the household? Discuss this in terms of "dialectical materialism" (page 203 in 4th edition). 3) Discuss how poverty intersects with gender, race, and nation in terms of work? Please use one example from the text and one international example from an article you found online. Chapter 5: 1. When it comes to cold climates and how it relates to my college and the gender prejudice that may exist. I would argue that our campus has come a long way, but not so far that there are no biases at the institution; however, there may be biases in departments, such as fewer women academics or professors who are not taken seriously. Some male colleagues, in my experience, are not appreciative of female teachers and hold them to different standards. Many of my male peers in my major department (Mechanical Engineering) would berate our female teachers for being harsh when our male instructors were even harsher. In the textbook it says, “They assert that students hold women teachers to different standards and evaluate them more harshly.”(Aulette, 154).I asked a close peer how he thought campus had evolved in terms of equality, and he said campus had changed a lot in terms of how things used to be, and that even though we go to a PWI, you start to see more inclusiveness in terms of activities and programming. I asked another close peer how she felt, and she believes that there is still room for improvement because, as a female-dominated major, they don't always take her seriously, or her peers treat her fairly, but still make misogynistic jokes that make her uncomfortable. Finally, the university has changed for the better, but more adjustments can be made to make Georgia Southern a better place for all students. Chapter 6 2. Paid and unpaid work are related in that they both require labor, one of which can be compensated financially. Paid work is work that you do in society such as corporate and others. Unpaid work is work done inside the house for the benefit of the house. Unpaid work is work that is not taken seriously. Unpaid work contributes to workplace inequality by requiring people to do work at home even if they are not paid for it. You go to work an 8-hour shift just to come home and do work that keeps you alive so you can go back to work. Because society views unpaid work as feminine work, which is why you can't get paid for it, it has an impact. Work is work no matter how you look at it; someone took time and used energy to do something. In the textbook it says, “Women who are not in the paid labor force do more housework than women who are in the paid labor force, and men who are not in the paid labor force do more housework than men who are in the paid labor force.” (Aulette, 196). When it comes to paid work demonstrating inequality in the household, it provides an outlet for the work person to not do housework when keeping a house together is difficult. It gives people an excuse not to help out and gives them a break, whereas the person in the household gets no break at all. Some people try to think of sleep as a break. Finally, work is work, and both require people to expend energy. Working a paid or unpaid job is not easy; people simply have to work together when they have a union and break down gender roles to help live the best life possible. 3. Poverty interacts with race, gender, and nation; all of these factors contribute to the structure of this system. How a person's race affects not only what jobs they work in, but also their ability to get a job. And gender, with women and children having the lowest incomes, as well as the gender pay gap. When it comes to work, men must uphold the masculine title of provider, and if they do not, they are looked down upon by society. When it comes to women, they are expected to stay at home and not work, which is a problem because divorce is what causes a woman to be poor. As a result of the separation, the man no longer supports her because he no longer sees her as a responsibility. In the textbook it says, “In 2006…nearly half of the world(44%)-about 3 billion people-lived on less than $2 a day,” (Aulette, 192). In today's society, the figures are different because there are nearly 125 million people who rely on it, but we are also experiencing annual inflation. Poverty has an impact on race because of how history has played out and how people are viewed in interviews and job descriptions. White men hold the majority of top-level jobs, and as a result, some companies have issues with including men of other races or all women. Women of color face additional challenges because of racism and sexism, with them being excluded because of their skin color and sexual orientation. When it comes to inclusion, businesses will hire colored men and white women to fill quotas and make their organizations look good. In this article it says, “the economic conditions affecting gender inequality are the same as those affecting race inequality, and how these two systems of inequality might be linked.” (Browne and Misra 496). This just goes to show that having this implemented increases women's poverty because colored women are looked down on for getting a job to provide for themselves or others. They are qualified but must accept a lower position due to biases against them.
