INTERPRETING TIME ON A WEATHER MAP Standard Time ➢ ➢ ➢ Times on a weather map use a 24 hour time scale also known as “military time”, “Zulu time”, “Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)”, or “Universal Coordinated Time” (UTC)” This time scale does not have AM or PM designations. Midnight (12 AM) begins the day. Therefore, 12 AM Monday means that Monday has just begun. There are 4 time zones in the U.S. – Eastern Standard Time (EST), Central Standard Time (CST), Mountain Standard Time (MST), and Pacific Standard Time (PST) Instead, weather maps use a universal or world time scale which is based on when the sun passes over 0o Longitude. These time scales include those mentioned above: GMT, Z, and UTC. During Standard Time, local Phoenix time, which is MST, will be 7 hours behind the time that appear on weather maps. Ex.
