The mouth, or oral cavity, is the entry point of the digestive system. The lips and cheeks help guide food into the mouth, and the tongue assists in manipulation and mixing. 2. Chewing (Mastication):   Once food enters the mouth, the process of chewing, or mastication, begins. Chewing serves two main purposes: breaking down food into smaller, more manageable pieces and mixing it with saliva to form a semiliquid mixture called chyme. 3. Salivary Glands and Saliva:   Salivary glands located in and around the mouth release saliva in response to the presence of food.
