How are safety and cost affected by the use of informatics at the point of care? Give two to three specific examples. Nurses and other members of the healthcare team are able to give the best possible treatment in the most efficient and effective way thanks to the use of informatics. Expense, reduction of medication errors, and security are three examples of issues that might affect how often and how much informatics is used. The healthcare provider and nurse may concurrently examine a patient's medical history, and data retrieval is considerably easier which can reduce expenses. Nurses may easily access a patient's drug list and order history with EHRs which can reduce medication errors. Furthermore, informatics can improve security as by providing tools and strategies to protect sensitive patient information from unauthorized access or breaches. The strengths of my reply includes that informatics helps nurses make clinical decisions and provide care more efficiently and quickly by collecting, managing, and communicating information across systems of care. A weakness was that I did not mention that nurses are able to deliver care at the bedside which allows them to view EHR, do vital signs, which reduces medication and medical errors. I did mention that the nurse and the provider can access the EHR at the same time from different places which allows for better collaborative care. Furthermore, nurses can search databases and generate reports to compare clients' laboratory findings and vital signs, which are hard to read on paper. Weakness includes that I did not recognize that the medical team can also follow critical pathways to expedite clients progress and often shorten hospital stays and reduce costs. Furthermore, I did not mention that nurse managers and risk managers can also use this technology to analyze data and create standards and outcomes to prove the quality of care.
