ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Medication STUDENT NAME _____________________________________ Diphenhydramine MEDICATION __________________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________ antihistamine CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Action Competes with histamine for receptor site on effector cells in GI tract, blood vessels, respiratory tract Therapeutic Use anticholinergic, antipruritic, antitussive, antiemetic, antidyskinetic, sedative effects Complications Drowsiness, dizziness, muscle weakness, hypotension, urinary retention, thickening of bronchial secretions, dry mouth, nose, throat, lips; in elderly: sedation, dizziness; Occasional: Epigastric distress, flushing, visual/hearing disturbances, paresthesia, diaphoresis, chills Medication Administration IV-May be given undiluted, Give IV injection over at least 1 min, Maximum rate: 25 mg/min IM-Give deep IM into large muscle mass. PO-Give with food Contraindications/Precautions Acute exacerbation of asthma, neonates or premature infants, breastfeeding. Cautions: Narrow-angle glaucoma, stenotic peptic ulcer, COPD, prostatic hypertrophy, pyloroduodenal/bladder neck obstruction, CV disease, asthma, increased IOP, hyperthyroidism Interactions Nursing Interventions Monitor bp, . Monitor children closely for paradoxical reaction, monitor vitals, ascultate lungs and heart, monitor for worsening allergic reaction antihypertensives, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, asprin, ergotamine, heparin, alcohol use Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness no allergic reactions are present.
