The Structure and Function of the Muscular System Muscles are organs made up of many different cell types which play a role in how the muscular system functions. This system is responsible for our movement - by contracting and relaxing, stabilizing our joints, keeping us warm (generating heat when contracting), helping us hold our position while sitting (our posture). Every skeletal muscle is made up of hundreds of thousands of muscle cells (fibers). Each muscle fiber is wrapped in a connective tissue sheath. Each skeletal muscle fiber has a nerve ending that controls its activity, an artery, and vein. The muscles are wrapped in a connective tissue sheet that binds them into functional groups. The muscle connects to the bone via a tendon. These different types of cells work together to provide and maintain the functionality of the muscular system.
