An isotherm is a line connecting locations with equal temperature. Isotherm maps show where temperatures are relatively high and low and also where temperature changes are gradual or dramatic over a distance. What do Isotherms look like? They can be represented on colored maps (as seen on the projector) or with curved lines connecting the temperatures as seen here. Questions: Look at the colored map on the computer screen to answer questions 1-4: 1. 2. 3. 4. Where were the coldest temperatures on this day? _________________________. Where were the warmest temperatures on this day? ________________________. Practice: Draw isotherms for the map of the USA below. Color the map to show the different temperatures. Include a key for your colors. 1. Draw your isotherms in a neat smooth line instead of a jagged line. 2. An isotherm should begin and end at an edge of the map, or, alternatively, loop around and close on itself. 3. An isotherm should never branch or fork; think of an isotherm as a fence, with lower temperatures on one side and higher temperatures on the other. 4. Isotherms should be drawn at equal intervals. 1. Based on the position of the isotherms, estimate the temperature of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Isobars: What is an isobar? An isobar is a line connecting locations with equal pressure. Isobars show pressure changes over space and help to describe large scale weather patterns over a region. With isotherms, isobars make it easier to read and analyze weather maps. Looking at patterns of temperature and pressure can help determine weather conditions a few days ahead. On a weather map, areas of low pressure are marked with an “L” and generally will experience precipitation while areas of high pressure are marked with an “H” and usually have clear, sunny conditions. When the isobars are closely bunched together, the area can expect windy conditions. Practice: Observe the isobars on the map above and complete the following: 1. What is the range of the isobars given? (how many mb separate each isobar line?) 2. What would you expect the pressure to be a the “H”? 3. In which direction would winds be moving? (explain here and draw arrows to show) 4. What type of weather would you expect where we live given the isobar map above?
