Name of Myth: “Kronos and Zeus” Notes:  Kronos usurps father (Uranus) and breaks promise to free brother  Gaea is angry and tells Kronos that he will turn out like his father  Kronos marries Rhea, his sister; they have Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon; Kronos eats them  Gaea helps Rhea hide her last baby, Zeus; Kronos eats a rock  Zeus is raised in secret on the island of Crete  Zeus and Rhea trick Kronos into drinking poison and he vomits up the “babies” who are fully grown gods  Zeus and his siblings fight Kronos and the Titans for 10 years  Gaea says, “Enough!” and tells Zeus that to win, he must free the Hundred-Handed Ones and Cyclopes  Cyclopes give gifts in thanks o Zeus gets thunderbolt (thunder and lightning) o Poseidon gets trident (fish, “shake the earth”) o Hades gets helmet of invisibility (kill Medusa)  Now Zeus puts Titans and Kronos in Tartarus  Domains o Zeus becomes god of the sky (marries Hera) o Poseidon = god of the sea o Hades = god of the underworld o Hera = goddess of marriage and childbirth (marries Zeus) o Hestia = goddess of home (fireplace) o Demeter = goddess of grain
