Anne Lamott, author, food reviewer and a graduate of Goucher College in Baltimore, presents and argument for the need to write first drafts in an extract from her book “Bird by Bird” called “Shitty First Drafts”Lamott states that all good writers write shitty first drafts and that a big reason to write them is to overcome the initial stiffness of writing. Writing first drafts starts you up with something to work and develop on. She calls first drafts, “the child’s draft” and goes on to say that this is where you experiment with whatever you want. From ideas and concepts to characters and dialogue, no one is going to see your “shitty first draft. All that coupled with this freedom to write without anyone judging it is what connects it to the endgame. Coming back over to the shitty draft and then making a second draft and a third draft is what ends up forming a masterpiece.
