The song I chose for chapter 11 was “Boplicity” (1949) by Miles Davis Nonet. The instruments
used for this song are trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba, alto saxophone, baritone
saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, and the arranger was Gil Evans. This song has an AABA
tune. There are three choruses. The first and second choruses’ I would say are pretty trumpet
heavy whereas the 2nd focuses mostly on the French horns. Then the song finishes strongly
with a little piano solo. I would say this song was for maybe people who are a little bit more
proper or older. It is not very fast tempo or dancable so younger audiences might not take to it
as much. The song is likely made for the artist though. To show his skill and talents because
everything blended and transitioned beautifully in this song.
The song I chose for chapter 12 was “Soul Shoutin” by Shirley Scott. The instruments in this
song are the organ, tenor saxophone, bass, and drums. This song's melody starts with the
organ, then the organ kind of blends into the background a bit while the saxophone takes the
stage. The bass and drums remain in the background. The tempo of this song is a little fasterpaced than many of the other songs we've recently listened to but not too fast. This song I think
was made for an audience. It is a catchy and danceable song. I think it was likely made for that
purpose, a song for people to enjoy and dance to.
The song I chose for chapter 13 was “So What” by Miles Davis. This song consists of
(instrument-wise) the piano, trumpet, alto, tenor saxophone, bass, and drums. The song starts
with just the piano in a slow and sad melody. Then the drums hop in and jazz it up a bit. Then
the saxes hop in and make it happier and more fun to listen to. And lastly, the trumpet hops in
and takes the show. The saxophones do have their moments as well in the spotlight. I would
say this song was made for the artist. Something to have fun making and show your skills. It's
not super danceable but do see it being played in a club or something that is very high class. Or
in a hotel elevator. It's also i think a good way to show his skills.
