PEPTIDES AND PROTEINS:
-
Protein are polymers made from amino acids and they form peptide

The process of making proteins from amino acids is a condemnation reaction
that leads to the formation of water molecutes

-
Protein are also broken down to form amino acids , by hydrolysis
-
We can carry out acid or base hydrolysis.
Acid hydrolysis :
H2N-CH- CO-NH-CH2 -COOM + H2O + 2H' 1 H3N+ CH-COOH + H3 N+ CH,-COOH
CH2
CH3
-
The mixture of amino acids can then be separated using paper chromalography
or TLC.
-
Amino acich are colourless hence a botting agent must be sprayed on the
chromatogram, to help identify the positions of the amino acids.
-
Rf values are then worked out, to help determine the amino acids present
If base hydrolyris is carried out , the excess base reacts with the carboxylic
group to form carboxylate iom.
