What Is Anthropology? ANTH 2301 Holism, Anthropology’s Distinctive Approach The COVID-19 pandemic struck the world in 2020. As of August 2021, the coronavirus had sickened about 210 million individuals, and more than 4 million had perished from it. The long-term repercussions of this sickness on the minds and lungs of those who have recovered are currently being investigated by medical researchers. Additionally, some have found psychological impacts, including elevated chances for schizophrenia, anxiety, and sadness. The pandemic's consequences extended beyond the field of medicine to every sphere of our society and daily existence. People were compelled to stay at home and "shelter in place" in communities all over the world in order to protect themselves from the illness. Due to their inability to pay their debts, numerous businesses permanently shuttered their doors and closed to the public. Nearly 50 million Americans reported losing their employment as a result of the epidemic by May 2020. As people worried about those who were ill and lamented the loss of the dead, the sickness outbreak turned into an epidemic of sadness. Adults who were stressed out by all the interruptions started abusing drugs and alcohol, and the rate of addiction rose sharply. Domestic violence incidents increased. As some Americans began to hold China responsible for the disease's origin and global spread, racial violence against Asian Americans escalated. All throughout the world, people expressed feeling more alone and distant from their friends and relatives. However, there were also some advantageous outcomes. As a result of fewer people driving, many metropolitan areas saw improvements in air quality, which helped a large number of asthmatics. Some folks saw stars for the first time when they peered up into the night sky. Since they could no longer spend time with their friends and family in person, some people claimed to value them even more. Many individuals learnt how to utilise FaceTime and Skype as well as other new social media tools like Zoom. People also started to recognise the important roles that "essential workers" played in hospitals, nursing homes, hardware stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores. How could a virus have changed so much? The different components of society are interwoven to form a complicated totality. Significant shifts in one domain, like an epidemic in the field of public health, can set off a domino effect that affects the family, the economy, religion, and the political system, among other social domains. The term "holism" is likely familiar to you from our previous talk about anthropology's dedication to comprehending how society's many components interact. A unique approach to study, holism emphasises the dynamic links between many spheres of culture.
