They are considered oppressive because they utilise physical enforcement and coercion in their operations. The army and the police, for example, play a crucial role in upholding public order and frequently use violence or the threat of violence to silence critics and dissent. Similar to this, the judicial system maintains social inequality by enforcing legal rules that usually represent the interests of the ruling class through courts and jails. Nevertheless, Althusser's theory goes beyond the state apparatus's outwardly coercive means of repression. He explores further the more nuanced, but no less widespread, control mechanisms found in the ideological state machinery. The ideological state apparatus is made up of several organisations that rely more on ideas than force to carry out their functions. These institutions include political parties, public and private education systems, religious organisations, the family, the media (radio, newspapers, and television), and cultural organisations that include sports, the arts, and literature. The ISA works by disseminating and promoting ideas that mould people's views, attitudes, and beliefs to conform to the goals of the ruling class, in contrast to the RSA, which employs overt and visible repression. According to Althusser, these institutions of ideology play a crucial role in preserving the hegemony of the ruling class because they foster and disseminate a worldview that legitimises and normalises the status quo in society. For instance, educational systems inculcate attitudes and social conventions that support the tenets of capitalism in addition to information. Students learn at school to be disciplined, obedient, and punctual— characteristics widely prized in capitalist society and essential to the operation of the capitalist labour market. Similarly, by pushing narratives that uphold the status quo and marginalise or demonise alternative voices, media institutions play a critical role in influencing public opinion and perception. The ideological state machinery also benefits greatly from the contributions made by religious institutions. They frequently spread beliefs that support accepting oneself for one's social standing and the notion that hardship endured in this world would be recompensed in the hereafter, deterring individuals from questioning the status quo. As an ideological state infrastructure, the family upholds social inequalities and patriarchal standards by fostering gender norms and expectancies in children and via childrearing. Ideological state apparatuses are neither completely unchallenged nor entirely homogenous, despite their ubiquitous role in bolstering the ideas of the ruling class. Althusser concedes that there is possibility for social reform and that class conflict occurs in these institutions. For example, within the educational system, radical ideas and critical thinking may coexist with the promotion of capitalist ideology by the prevailing curriculum.
