Concurrently, the international community applied pressure to the apartheid government through the athletic boycott of South Africa, showcasing the strength of worldwide unity in the struggle for human rights. The ultimate success of Nelson Mandela—who loved sports himself—emphasized how uniting sports can be in bringing people together and promoting unity. The place of music, art, and sports in resistance is still changing in the modern day. Social media and digital technologies have expanded these platforms' influence and audience. Athletes' activism, music, and visual art have all been used by movements such as Black Lives Matter to highlight systemic racism and police brutality. Public areas are being transformed into canvases for social change by street art and murals, which have grown into potent weapons for spreading messages of resistance and unity. Using their platforms to promote equality and justice, musicians and artists work together on initiatives that tackle current social challenges. Furthermore, athletes are using their prominence more and more to call attention to injustices. For instance, the NBA has seen a number of players, teams, and the league itself take positions on social topics ranging from voting rights to racial inequity. Players in the WNBA have been strong advocates for social justice, placing the league at the forefront of activism. These initiatives show the tremendous impact of sports outside of arenas by mobilising spectators and the general public in addition to bringing attention to the issue.
