Despite being perceived as a domain outside from politics and social matters, sports have evolved into a platform for opposition and disobedience. Athletes have a special platform to advocate for change and bring attention to social problems because of their prominence and impact. Sports celebrities have utilised their position to make impactful remarks about social and political concerns, ranging from Tommie Smith and John Carlos's raised fists during the 1968 Olympics to Colin Kaepernick's kneeling during the playing of the national anthem. One of the most famous incidents in the history of sports activism is the protests at the Olympics in 1968 led by Tommie Smith and John Carlos.
