Forming Family through Kinship ANTH 2301 Postmarital Residence Rules After being married, a couple starts a new family and moves into a shared house, either as a stand-alone family or as a part of an existing family. Postmarital residence rules are social norms that dictate where a freshly married couple will live. They are closely linked to the descent rules that govern society. If there are exceptional circumstances, including financial hardship or homelessness, these regulations may need to be modified. For instance, it is becoming more typical in the United States for recently married couples to put off starting a separate residence until they require family assistance due to employment, education, or children. Five patterns of postmarital residency exist: • A newlywed couple who chooses neolocal residency creates a separate home that is not related to either spouse's family. Bilateral descent is mostly linked to this pattern of residency. Although it is customary in our own society, couples in the United States do occasionally move in with one spouse's parents during difficult financial times or periods of family necessity. • Patrilocal residency is more prevalent globally and is linked to civilizations that follow patrilineal ancestry. When a newlywed couple chooses to live patrilocally, they set up shop next to or with the groom's father or his family. This indicates that the bride leaves her parents upon marriage, while the husband stays in his home and/or family group. Matrilocal dwelling is connected with civilizations that practise matrilineal descent; their future offspring will be members of the groom's lineage. Following marriage, the bride stays in her household and/or family group, while the groom leaves his parents, and the newlyweds form their own household with or close to the bride's mother or her relatives. This is known as matrilocal residency. The bride's family will receive their future offspring. • A less common but related practice to matrilineal descent is avunculocal residency, when the newlyweds live with or close to the brother of the groom's mother. The groom typically has a long-standing relationship with his maternal uncle, who is descended from his own mother, in civilizations where avunculocal residence is practiced. The pair can take advantage of both the husband's and the wife's matrilines by entering the home of the groom's maternal uncle. The couple chooses which spouse's family to live with or close to when they have ambilocal home. Ambilineal descent is linked to ambilocal residency. When living in ambilocal housing, a newlywed couple has typically already decided which spouse's family to join before getting married. Then, their progeny will follow that specific line of ancestry.
