Anthropologists employed an evolutionary model of religion in the 1960s, which linked more complex religious systems to more complex political systems and less organised religious systems to simpler civilizations. Anthropologists observed that all types of organization—political, economic, social, and religious—became increasingly complicated in tandem with population growth. For instance, when tribal communities developed, religion broadened to serve as a means of resolving conflict and desire in addition to serving as a system of healing and connection with both living and inanimate objects in the environment. Both sorcery and witchcraft are types of magic that are more prevalent in larger-scale, more intricate cultures. Although definitions of witchcraft and sorcery vary among fields and researchers, there is general consensus over the shared characteristics of both. Witchcraft entails the use of immaterial, as opposed to material, means to alter another person's circumstances. It is typically connected to rituals like incantations, spells, blessings, and other forms of formulaic language that have transforming effects when spoken. Witchcraft and sorcery are comparable, but sorcery uses tangible objects to alter someone else's circumstances. It is typically connected to rituals like making love potions, magical bundles, and any other action that involves using the bodily remnants of another person (such their hair, nails, or even excreta). While some academics contend that sorcery and witchcraft are "dark," antisocial, and malicious practices meant to punish others, ethnographic research is replete with instances of more ambiguous, or even constructive, applications. The Beng people of Côte d'Ivoire, Africa, are studied by cultural anthropologist Alma Gottlieb (2008). She explains that the king the Beng elect must be a witch himself, not because he can harm others but rather because his mystical abilities enable him to protect the Beng people under his rule. His skills and expertise enable him to be a good leader. Because witchcraft and sorcery may be used to convey societal discord, some historians think that they may be later innovations in religion rather than ancient rites. What connection exists between political organisation, religion, and conflict? People in a society that is growing in number are less likely to know and have firsthand experience with one another; instead, they must rely on family reputation or status as the foundation for building trust. others also find themselves engaging with others who have different opinions and behaviours from their own as social variety grows. People that are most like us are often the ones we trust, and variety can breed suspicion. People are forced to engage with one another in what may seem like unsafe settings since they don't know or comprehend the people they live, work, and trade with. This leads to social stress. Witchcraft and sorcery offer a sense of security and power over others in such a situation. Historically, religion developed to give mechanisms like witchcraft and sorcery that helped people maintain a feeling of social control over their lives as populations grew and sociocultural institutions grew larger and more complicated. Both witchcraft and sorcery depend on magic, and all major world religions teach some form of magic. It is widely acknowledged that the anthropological investigation of magic dates back to the late 1800s, when Scottish social anthropologist Sir James G. Frazer published The Golden Bough in 1890. Published in many volumes, this work describes the customs and beliefs of a wide variety of civilizations, all gathered by Frazer from the testimonies of missionaries and travellers. Frazer did not do fieldwork; rather, he was an armchair anthropological. He gave one of the first definitions of magic in his writings, calling it "a fallacious guide of conduct as well as a spurious system of natural law" (Frazer [1922] 1925, 11). A more accurate and objective definition presents magic as an alleged natural law system whose application results in transformations. We function with evidence of visible cause and effect in the natural world, which is the realm of our senses and the objects we see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. In a system like magic, the reasons or acts aren't always evident. Spells and other magical formulas spoken aloud have no discernible, empirical impact. But this abstract cause and effect holds equally real and significant meaning for magicians. Because magic is predicated on sympathy, or shared feeling, Frazer refers to it as "sympathetic magic." According to him, there are two fundamental components of sympathetic magic: the law of contagion and the rule of resemblance. The idea that a magician might make a desired alteration by mimicking it is known as the rule of likeness. This relates to deeds or charms that imitate or appear to have the desired effects. Examples include using an effigy that mimics another person or even the Upper Palaeolithic Venus figurine, whose sensual female body parts may have been utilised in a fertility rite. The magician can influence the person who is thought to be represented by this stand-in character by acting upon the stand-in figure. The rule of contagion is the idea that objects that have previously come into touch with one another always stay linked. Examples of such objects include a piece of jewellery that belonged to a loved one, a locket containing a baby tooth or hair, or personal remnants that are utilised in magical rituals. This categorization of magic expands our knowledge of its applications and its universality among faiths. Prayers and unique burial goods—a.k.a. funerary artifacts—indicate that magic is an inherently human activity that is not limited to tribal communities. Most religious traditions and civilizations include individuals burying or cremating loved ones with sentimental items like jewellery, clothes, or even a picture. These customs and romantic deeds create enchanted links and ties between deeds, objects, and people. Even the most common religious practices, such as prayers and shamanic travelling, which is a type of metaphysical travel to spirits and deities, are magical agreements that uplift the faith of those who engage in them. Anthropologists view magic as an intense act of human faith rather than as something extraneous to religion that lessens seriousness.
