Various tactics have been used by colonising forces all over the world to reduce the autonomy and influence of Indigenous groups, especially when it comes to resource management, land control, and cultural preservation. These tactics often involved forcing adult Indigenous people, as well as young people, to undertake hard and menial labour. Because of this labour exploitation, Indigenous tribes were essentially prevented from becoming wealthy or achieving greater social and economic positions. In addition, in an effort to destroy Indigenous spiritual traditions and beliefs, colonists deliberately enforced Christianity through official mandates. This cultural erasure was made worse by the colonisers' educational policies, which either denied Indigenous children access to any kind of education or forced them into boarding schools where they were taught colonial ideals and customs in addition to being stripped of their cultural identities. These integration initiatives have had a significant and wide-ranging effect. The population of many Indigenous communities has decreased significantly, and other tribes have entirely vanished. Countries in Latin America have seen a particularly noticeable increase in this tendency. These days, the vast majority of people living in these countries are descended from Indigenous people. However, a lot of people would rather highlight their White or Spanish ancestry than their Indigenous roots because of the strong and ongoing urge to integrate. As a result, there is much less evident affiliation with Indigenous traditions, and Indigenous people are now minorities in areas where they used to be the majority. In these situations, assimilation pressures—the process through which people or groups are taught or socialised to embrace a foreign culture—have generally been successful. As a result, inside their native lands, the residual communities that identify as Indigenous frequently live as minority. This is not only a Latin American phenomena. Similar to the Maori of New Zealand and the Native Americans of the United States, indigenous tribes across the world refuse to be reduced to the status of mere minorities inside their own countries. Certain groups contend that the categorization in question ignores their special historical and legal links to the state. Native American tribes in the US have access to resources and territory that other minority groups do not because of treaties and sovereign rights. The federal government and the tribes signed these treaties, which acknowledge the tribes' inherent sovereignty and right to self-governance. In a similar vein, the Treaty of Waitangi, which established the Maori people of New Zealand's unique relationship with the government, is a foundational document. The purpose of this treaty is to safeguard Maori autonomy and cultural heritage while ensuring them access to resources and services. In government policies and financing programmes, Indigenous peoples sometimes find themselves grouped together with other minority groups despite these legal safeguards. The unique historical and legal settings that set Indigenous peoples apart from other minority groups are ignored by this broad approach. For example, the United States government's special treaty commitments to Native American tribes are not often reflected in federal financing for minority-focused programmes. Consequently, it is possible to ignore or provide insufficient attention to the interests and rights of Indigenous groups. In example, the Maori people of New Zealand have made a strong case against being classified as a minority group. They contend that being classified in this way weakens their claims to the resources and services that the Treaty of Waitangi guarantees and undercuts their rights under the agreement. As tangata whenua, or people of the land, the Maori want acknowledgement of their fundamental role in the history of the country and their unwavering ties to their ancestral lands. There is a big difference between being an Indigenous people with sovereign rights and being a minority group. It draws attention to the special status of Indigenous peoples, who have withstood centuries of colonisation and demands to assimilate, to retain their distinctive cultural identities and legal status. To guarantee that Indigenous peoples obtain the dignity and rights to which they are entitled on the basis of their ancient treaties and sovereign position, it is imperative to acknowledge this distinction. In conclusion, the history of Indigenous peoples is characterised by attempts to eradicate their traditions and diminish their authority, frequently through coerced labour, the imposition of religion, and assimilation-focused educational practices. Particularly in Latin America, these initiatives have resulted in the dwindling of Indigenous communities and the deterioration of their traditional identity. Indigenous peoples are now frequently classified as minorities inside their own territories, a designation that ignores their special legal and historical links to the government. Indigenous communities that refuse to be classified as minorities and instead defend their rights based on treaties and sovereign status are best represented by Native Americans in the United States and Maori in New Zealand. In order to remedy the past injustices experienced by Indigenous peoples and to assist their current attempts to maintain their traditions and identities, it is imperative that these rights be acknowledged and respected.
