Cultural Background and Media Storytelling Stereotypes and misunderstandings can be sustained by the oversimplification or misrepresentation of culture in the media. Ethnologists such as Edward Said have criticised the 'Orientalism' that appears in Western media, when Eastern cultures are portrayed from a Eurocentric perspective. For instance, films like "The Last Samurai" fabricate a story that elevates Western actors to the role of heroes, obscuring the complex histories and agency of Asian societies. This distortion downplays the complexity of cultural identities, feeding negative stereotypes that in turn influence public perceptions and attitudes towards such cultures. Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding theory provides an example of how consumers use their cultural settings to comprehend media content. A relevant illustration is how Black communities are portrayed in films. Movies such as 'Black Panther' present optimistic images of African civilisations, refuting the stereotypes of Black people historically as inferior or barbaric. While teaching larger audiences about the richness of African ancestry, this kind of portrayal helps Black viewers reconnect with their identities and positively shapes collective identities. Media Professionals' Ethical Obligations Because of the media's ability to shape public opinion, media producers have a huge ethical duty to represent cultures truthfully and with dignity. The '#RepresentationMatters' movement's emergence demonstrates the need for genuine and diverse representation in the media. The animated series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' encountered criticism due to its inaccurate portrayal of cultures influenced by Asian customs. The audience's response sparked discussions about the necessity of cultural advisors in media creation to prevent cultural appropriation and distortion, emphasising the ways in which anthropological viewpoints may direct moral media activities. In summary To sum up, anthropology is an essential lens for examining the complex connections between culture and media portrayal.
